must like bikes

fixed gear single speed three speed ten speed
single ring double crank triple with a granny
aluminum carbon titanium magnesium plutonium steel is real

fast turns on country roads
ride out to harvard
ride down boylston and up newbury
down to the river out to the coast along the waterfront

how long can you climb
how easy can you spin
how long can you coast
how fast you can descend
how slow can you go

asphalt pavement crushed gravel dirt stone roots
road mountain cyclocross
single track double track winding country lanes
stop for coffee feel the breeze take a nap

feel the breeze
something new something old
independence freedom adventure
little kid on their first two wheeler
couldn't stop smiling if they tried

Thou shalt not fall in love so easily

I need to remember that line.

valve ink

the ink on your arm shows a secret world
hidden beneath dirt and grease and grime.
a world pristine and pure
mechanical complexity and precision
bathed in oil, hidden from the world,
waiting for you.

a story of knowledge and skill,
of pride and independence.
a private story that you
shared with me.

to ride with you on the city streets
to dance with you under the night sky.
inky dark, distant stars and moon
lights and colors reflecting off
the asphalt's oily sheen,
the water in the harbor,
the glass walls that surround us.

to listen to you tell your tale
a story of knowledge and skill,
of pride and independence.

to watch you pilot your ship
to follow in your draft
to ride with you on the city streets.
